The Palme d'Or has been awarded to Lung Boonmee Raluek Chat (Uncle Boonmee who can Recall his Past Lives) by the Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Charlotte Gainsbourg, the lead actress of the closing film, The Tree, made the presentation of the ultimate award. The winner declared: "This Palme is very important for the history of Thailand and the Thai people." He thanked, "the spirits and ghosts of Thailand," who allowed him to be where he was today, as well as his parents, who, 30 years ago took him to a small cinema.

The Grand Prix went to Des Hommes et des dieux (Of Gods and Men) directed by Xavier Beauvois. After receiving his award from the actress, Salma Hayek, the director described his experience of shooting the film as a “moment of grace” and took the opportunity to pay tribute to the memory of the eight Christian monks from the Monastery of Tibhirine whose last days alive he depicts in his film.

The Prize for Best Director has been awarded to Mathieu Amalric for his film Tournée (On Tour). After the announcement, the winner declared: “This moves me very much, I have the impression of coming home. (He calls his actresses.) I need all of you to be able to experience this moment. The direction was all them. Huge thanks.

Actress Diane Kruger presented the tied award for Best Actor to Javier Bardem for

directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and to Elio Germano for
(Our Life) directed by Daniele Luchetti.
 Javier Bardem said "Bonsoir merci beaucoup" (Good evening, thank you very much) in French, before saying that this award would not exist without "the extraordinary film directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu".
Elio Germano also thanked his director, Daniele Luchetti, as well as "Italy and the Italians who fight to make Italy a better country, in spite of the ruling class".

The Award for Best Screenplay went to Lee Chang-dong for Poetry. After receiving his award from the French actress, Emmanuelle Devos, the director said: “I´d like to thank Mr Tim Burton and the other members of his Jury. I´d like to share this honour with all of the film´s actors and actresses.”

The Jury Prize has been awarded to A Screaming Man by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun. After receiving the Prize from actress Asia Argento, the director declared: “I come from a country where there isn’t much of anything. In a kind of a desert, I learnt that you have to make films like you cook your favourite dishes for the people you love.”

The Best Actress Prize has been awarded to Juliette Binoche for her role in Copie conforme (Certified Copy) by Abbas Kiarostami. After have being handed the Prize by actor/director Guillaume Canet, Juliette Binoche said: “How wonderful, how wonderful it was to work with you, Abbas! 63rd FESTIVAL DE CANNES AWARDS

63rd FESTIVAL DE CANNES AWARDS

The official Jury of this 63rd Festival de Cannes, presided over by Tim Burton, revealed this evening the prizes winners during the closing Ceremony.

Kristin Scott Thomas hosted Charlotte Gainsbourg on the stage of the Grand Théâtre Lumière to award the Palme d’or to the best film among the 19 in Competition.

Julie Bertuccelli’s closing film The Tree starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Marton Csokas et Morgana Davies, was screened at the end of the ceremony.
